Mold Outbreak in La Mirada Caused by Leaking Air Conditioner Unit?
5/21/2024 (Permalink)
Our local Buena Park team has been restoring mold damage in La Mirada for many years. Under certain conditions, mold can develop in an air conditioning unit (AC):
Condensation: AC units work by cooling warm air, which causes moisture in the air to condense into water droplets. This water typically collects in a drip pan or drain pan underneath the evaporator coil. If the drip pan or drain line becomes clogged or blocked, water can accumulate inside the AC unit instead of draining properly. This stagnant water creates a humid environment ideal for mold growth.
Dust and Debris Accumulation: Dust, dirt, and other organic debris can accumulate inside the AC unit over time. When combined with moisture from condensation, these particles provide nutrients for mold spores to thrive. Mold can grow on the surfaces of the evaporator coil, fan blades, ductwork, and other components within the AC unit, especially in areas where dust and moisture are present.
Poor Maintenance: Neglecting regular maintenance of the AC unit, such as failing to replace air filters, clean coils, or inspect for leaks, can exacerbate conditions conducive to mold growth. A dirty or malfunctioning AC unit is more likely to accumulate moisture and organic debris, providing an ideal environment for mold to flourish.
